WATCH OUT FOR THOSE WHITE SOX
The Twins are currently headed to Arizona for a three game series against the Diamondbacks. Hopefully they can get back on the winning track and find a way to get their offense going again. They were just swept by the Chicago White Sox in their three game series and were only 1-5 on their recent home stand.
I said in an earlier column that I feel that it will be a two-team race in the Central Division between the Twins and the White Sox. Well, guess what? Chicago now has a two game lead over the Twins. What a display of power the White Sox have shown the Twins and their fans so far this season. The White Sox lead the season series 7-to-3 and have hit 19 homeruns in the 10 games. Only the Yankees have hit more team homeruns this season.
The thing that impresses me the most is that it seems like Chicago, under their new manager Ozzie Guillen, is a loose club. Because of Ozzie and his attitude, I see the White Sox having fun again. It’s something that has been missing from this club over the past few years.
I remember facing Guillen when he was a shortstop for the White Sox and he was a tough out and a very emotional player. It always looked like he loved playing the game and he had a very outgoing personality. It looks like he is managing this club like Tony Pena did last season with the Kansas City Royals, where he has them believing in their ability and having fun playing each game. Winning has helped Ozzie get his point across as it worked for Pena last year. And Pena ended up being named the American League Manager of the Year for the 2003 season.
The White Sox have a lot of talent on their club, but over the years it seems like there was always something missing. Team chemistry might be the answer and with winning it’s easier to build on this chemistry. We’ve seen how good team chemistry has helped the Twins get through some of their low points throughout a long season.
Hopefully this same team chemistry can help the Twins get back on the winning track. A few hits with runners in scoring position would help too!
Chemistry is nothing more then people believing in their ability no matter what field you are in. In the work place, isn’t it easier to go to work if you get along with your fellow employees and/or if you own a company, isn’t it easier if all your employees come to work because they want to come to work, rather then they have to go to work?
Find ways to help build that chemistry, not only at work, but more importantly, at home. Even family life is better if everyone gets along.
Thank you for reading my column and may all my readers find that chemistry in their lives.
Your baseball friend,
Bert Blyleven
