TWINS ARE HEADED TO NEW YORK

My last column was dated July 25th and I apologize for not writing one lately. The season flew by with all the traveling and it seemed as though every day throughout the past two months there was a new hurricane threatening our home in Florida and the surrounding areas.

First, I hope everyone is OK from all the bad weather that the hurricanes have caused and I pray that if you were involved that you and your love ones are safe.

The Twins have won their third consecutive Central Division title and are currently headed to New York to start the best-of-five American League Division Series. Johan Santana will start game one on Tuesday night with Brad Radke starting Wednesday night against those damn Yankees. Hopefully they will help carry the Twins back home with a two game advantage but I think the Twins wouldn’t be disappointed if they came back to the Metrodome tied.

The Yankees swept the Twins last week in New York and hopefully they learned something from those losses. What needs to happen against the Yankees are two things:

  1. Santana and Radke need to pitch shutout baseball in the first two or three innings.
  2. The Twins offense needs to get at least two or three runs off the Yankee starters early.

If this happens, the Twins can stay with them in the game. The Yankees are a very good come-from-behind ball club but if Johan and Brad are on, look for them to pitch seven innings and then turn it over to the bullpen. The bullpen cannot pitch more than three innings in either game or the Twins are in trouble.

The Yankees have owed the Twins throughout the years but that was then and this is now. They have to go into New York playing very aggressive baseball for them to beat the Yankees.

Playing aggressively is how we should live our lives too. Don’t take anything for granted and go into everything you do with dedication and enthusiasm. Believe me you will come out the winner in life.

Thanks for reading my column and let’s hope the Twins end up playing the winners of the Anaheim Angels/Boston Red Sox series.

I’ll be watching just like you and GO TWINS.
Your baseball friend,
Bert Blyleven
